그래서 한자명도 수창목(水蒼木), 수정목(水精木), 수청목(水靑木)이다. 봄에서 여름 사이 나무의 바깥껍질인 수피를 채취하여 맑은 날 건조시키는데 이것이 생약으로 유명한 진피(秦皮)이다.
잎은 기수우상복엽(奇數羽狀複葉·잎줄기 좌우에 몇 쌍의 작은 잎이 짝을 이루어 달리고, 끄트머리가 한 개의 작은 잎으로 된 깃꼴겹잎)으로 마주나기를 한다. 자웅이주(雌雄異株·암수딴그루)며 꽃은 봄에 가지 끝에 연초록의 잘잘한 꽃이 원추꽃차례로 무더기로 핀다. 여름에 가늘고 긴 날개가 있는 열매로 성숙하면 가을바람에 의존하여 종자 살포를 한다.
‘동의보감’에서는 충혈, 안질, 눈이 시려서 눈물이 흐를 때 물푸레나무 껍질을 우려낸 물로 씻으면 눈을 맑게 하는 소염효과가 있다고 씌어 있다.
중국고서 ‘신농본초경(神農本草經)’에도 ‘진피를 오랫동안 복용하면 두발은 희지 않고 불로한다’고 씌어 있다. 일본고서 ‘본초강목’에서도 ‘눈을 맑게 하고 안질과 동통(疼痛), 눈이 시릴 때 이용한다’라는 기록이 있는 것처럼 예부터 눈의 약으로 사용하고 있다.
북유럽 신화에 나오는 세계수, 우주수, 이그드라실이 바로 물푸레나무다. 켈트인에게는 우주수이며 물의 힘의 상징인 물푸레나무 가지로 기우제를 드리면 홍수를 막는다고 믿고 있다.
동서양을 막론하고 실생활에서도 쓰임새가 많다. 수피를 태워서 회색염료로 이용하고 박달나무보다 단단하여 절구공이, 도끼자루, 곤장대로 쓰였다.
또한 견고하고 탄력성 있는 목재는 건축, 가구재 등 야구배트로도 이용된다. 가지를 꺾어 물에 넣어두면 살균성이 강하고 쿠마린배당체가 나와서 진피 3ｇ을 물 0.3ℓ에 넣어서 절반이 될 때까지 달여서 복용하면 설사, 소염, 해열, 신경통, 류머티즘에 좋고 그 액으로 세안(洗眼)하면 결막염과 충혈, 안질에 좋다고 한다. 꽃말은 고결, 장엄, 사려분별이다.
